Painter Billy Morrow Jackson was born in Kansas City and earned his BFA from Washington University in St. Louis and MFA from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he taught from 1957-1987. A Modernist, many describe Jacksons style as representational surrealism. Working mostly in printmaking and painting, his work often examined and depicted the landscapes and cityscapes of the Champaign-Urbana region. An outspoken political activist, Jackson advocated for education, peace, racial injustice, and tolerance and created artworks for sale that helped to fund support for Civil Rights and social justice issues for which he so firmly stood. Jacksons works are included in institutions such as the Smithsonian, the National Gallery of Art, and others.
