This Victorian hand blown art glass vase displays a striking color shading from deep amethyst purple and magenta at the ruffled scalloped rim through rose pink to warm amber yellow at the base, the exterior surface worked in a diamond quilted pattern of raised lozenges created by molding or air trap technique, the glass clear and transparent throughout rather than satin or cased -- allowing light to transmit directly through the brilliant color gradient and giving the piece a jewel-like luminosity quite distinct from the matte surface of satin glass examples. The squat cylindrical form widens slightly toward the boldly flared and ruffled scalloped rim with individually crimped teeth, a form popular in Victorian art glass production from both English Stourbridge makers and American manufacturers including New England Glass, Mount Washington and Hobbs Brockunier. The shading from amethyst through rose to amber in clear transparent glass is an unusual and particularly striking color combination -- distinct from the more common cranberry to amber amberina shading -- and may indicate production in the Bohemian tradition where amethyst to amber shaded glass was a specialty. The base should be examined for a pontil mark and any maker stamp or paper label. Condition is very good with the color vivid and well preserved, the ruffled rim intact with no chips or losses.
