Height 4.5 in., Diameter 2.75 in. Weight 9.1 oz. Height 6.75 in., Diameter 2.75 in. Weight 4.4 oz., Height 10 in., Diameter 3.5 in. Weight 9.5 oz., Height 12 in., Diameter 3.75 in. Weight 14.9 oz. This graduated set of three hand blown amberina glass trumpet vases displays the characteristic shading from deep cranberry red at the flared and ruffled rim through a warm amber orange transition to clear golden yellow at the slender stem and circular foot, the color gradient achieved through the heat-sensitive glass technique in which gold oxide in the glass batch reanimates to cranberry when reheated -- a process first patented by the New England Glass Company in 1883 and subsequently adopted by Bohemian, English Stourbridge and other American manufacturers. Each vase is of classic trumpet form with a circular domed foot, slender drawn stem and flaring funnel body terminating in a ruffled and crimped rim with individually worked curling edges, the three pieces graduating in height to present as a formal garniture group designed for display together on a mantelpiece or sideboard. The smooth continuous color shading from rim to base -- without the abrupt color break seen in later flashed reproductions -- and the hand tooled ruffled rims with pontil marks on the bases are consistent with late Victorian or Edwardian period production. The maker is not currently identified and the bases should be examined for any marks -- Libbey signed amberina pieces of this trumpet form with ruffled rims are documented and would strengthen the attribution. All three vases are in very good condition with no chips or cracks and vivid well preserved color throughout.
