In 1928, when he was just a child, Siegfried Reinhardts family immigrated from Germany to St. Louis, where he remained a lifelong resident, later earning a BA in English Literature from Washington University. In the early 1950s, he was recognized for developing a unique style that combined elements of realism and surrealism to create a style known as supersurrealism. In 1955, he began his career as Professor of Art at Washington University and he remained there until 1970 and then taught at St. Louis Community College Meramec from 1971 until 1984. A prolific painter, designer, and stained glass artist, Reinhardt is known by many St. Louisans for his 1979 aviation-themed 142-foot mural at St. Louis Lambert International Airport. Reinhardt even worked at Emil Frei Studios designing stained glass windows from 1949 until his death and those works can be seen in places of worship and public buildings, in the St. Louis region and across the country. Highly collected, his artworks are included in countless private and public collections, including Saint Louis Art Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Vatican Museum.
