Height 28.75 in., Width 20 in. This large original front-of-house production poster documents the Royal Shakespeare Company production of Wild Oats Or The Strolling Gentleman by the Irish playwright John O Keeffe, performed at the Piccadilly Theatre Denman Street London W1 opening on 18 April 1977 -- the West End transfer of a production that had opened at the Aldwych Theatre on 9 December 1976 and was described by The Sunday Times as a public-demanded West End transfer, with the poster reproducing the critical superlatives Pure gold from The Sunday Times, Smash hit from Punch, Gales of laughter from the Financial Times and Simply delightful from The Observer. The cast list is a remarkable document of British theatrical talent at the threshold of major careers -- most notably Jeremy Irons, who played Harry Thunder and whose RSC Wild Oats appearances of 1976 to 1977 at the Aldwych, Piccadilly and Royal Shakespeare Theatre Stratford-upon-Avon preceded by only two years his breakthrough television performance as Charles Ryder in Brideshead Revisited (1981), and Zoe Wanamaker who played Jane, alongside Norman Rodway, Lewis Fiander, Joe Melia, Lisa Harrow and Patrick Godfrey. Wild Oats received its first professional production of the twentieth century in this RSC revival -- the play having been unperformed professionally since the 19th century -- and the production was directed by Clifford Williams with design by Ralph Koltai, costumes by Judith Bland and lighting by Robert Ornbo. The poster is in the distinctive RSC mustard yellow livery with green RSC logo and features period costume illustration vignettes of the characters in the tradition of 18th century theatrical prints. Condition shows age wear and surface soiling consistent with front-of-house display use.
