Height 15.5 in., Width 11.25 in. Imprimerie Chaix, Paris. This richly colored original stone lithograph by French Art Nouveau artist Rene Pean depicts a turbaned merchant seated cross-legged amid a lavish display of Oriental carpets, with a desert cityscape of domes and minarets and a camel caravan visible in the background, the bold display text advertising the Aux Trois Quartiers department store on the Boulevard de la Madeleine in Paris and its Oriental rug sale on Monday 27 November. The original poster was created by Pean as an advertisement for Aux Trois Quartiers -- one of the great Paris department stores of the Belle Epoque -- and was selected by Jules Cheret for reproduction as plate 211 in the final volume of Les Maitres de lAffiche, the celebrated series of 256 original stone lithographs published monthly by the Imprimerie Chaix between 1895 and 1900 to showcase the finest poster art of the era. Rene Pean spent much of his career working for and under the tutelage of Jules Cheret at the Chaix studios, and created several posters for Aux Trois Quartiers -- this Orientalist composition with its vivid palette of yellow, blue and terracotta is among his most striking works. This impression carries the Imprimerie Chaix blindstamp at lower left and the Les Maitres de lAffiche plate 211 designation confirming its authenticity as an original lithograph. The print is in very good condition with strong vivid color, clean margins and no tears or significant foxing.
