Height 9 in., Width 8 in., Depth 2.75 in. Weight 3 lbs., 11.1 oz. This Art Deco pressed glass vase by the Phoenix Glass Company of Monaca Pennsylvania is produced in the celebrated Goldfish or Koi pattern -- one of the most dramatic naturalistic designs in the Phoenix Martele Sculptured Artware line -- depicting large fantail goldfish and koi carp in exceptionally high relief on a rectangular pillow form with a short inset neck and softly rounded corners, the fish rendered in polished clear glass with textured scale detail and flowing fins against an overall frosted satin ground that creates the characteristic contrast of clear and matte surfaces central to Phoenixs design vocabulary. The Goldfish or Koi pattern was designed by Ruben Haley for Phoenix Glass Company and produced in the 1930s in a range of colorways including ocean blue, coral and orange, cream with green ground and the frosted clear seen here -- the standard pillow form measuring approximately 9 inches high by 8 inches wide. Ruben Haley was the primary design force behind Phoenix Consolidateds Sculptured Artware line, creating bold naturalistic relief patterns in the tradition of French Art Deco pressed glass that rivaled contemporary Verlys and Lalique production at a fraction of the price -- a comparison that makes Phoenix Consolidated glass increasingly attractive to collectors as the finest French examples disappear into museums and private collections. This lot is a natural companion to Lot 070 -- the Phoenix Glass Katydid pattern pair also in this auction -- and the two lots together represent a strong showcase of Ruben Haleys design range for Phoenix Consolidated. The base may carry a Phoenix Sculptured Artware paper label. Condition is very good with no chips or cracks and the frosted surface intact. Height approximately 9 inches.
