Height 13 in., Width 31 in., Depth 10 in. This large scale glazed terracotta sculpture depicts a recumbent male lion with head raised and mouth open in a full roar, the mane, facial features, paws and claws modeled with considerable sculptural detail and covered overall in a white craquelure glaze with brown tonal accents defining the mane strands and facial contours. The amber and green glass eyes are separately applied and painted, lending the face a striking naturalistic intensity that contrasts with the abstracted white glaze treatment of the body. Large scale Italian glazed terracotta lion sculptures of this form were produced in considerable numbers in the Tuscany and Umbria regions of Italy during the mid 20th century, serving as decorative objects for grand interior schemes associated with the Hollywood Regency aesthetic that was fashionable in American and European collecting circles from the 1950s through the 1970s. The sculpture is in good condition overall with minor surface scuffs and glaze wear consistent with age and handling, the modeling remaining crisp and the glaze bright. The base does not have an Italian maker mark or Made in Italy stamp to assist in attribution to a specific workshop.
