Height 3.25 in., Width 4 in., Depth 3.5 in. This rectangular cut crystal casket or jewelry box is constructed of thick clear crystal panels cut overall in a hobnail and diamond point pattern creating strong prismatic light refraction across the surfaces of both the hinged lid and body. The mounts are of gilt brass with an ornate embossed Gothic arch and rope twist frieze running the full perimeter of the hinge band, terminating at the front in a finely cast shield-form escutcheon plate with sunburst and feather decoration fitted with a keyhole surround. This form of cut crystal casket with decorative gilt bronze or brass mounts is closely associated with the French and Bohemian luxury glass trades of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, produced as presentation pieces and dressing table accessories for affluent households. The crystal is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or cloudiness, the cut surfaces retaining their original sharpness and brilliance throughout. The gilt brass mounts remain bright and well defined with no significant losses to the gilding and the hinge mechanism functioning correctly.
