Height 7 in., Width 11 in., Depth 4 in. Weight 3 lbs. This cast brass and iron ceremonial object depicts a stylized elephant pulling a two-wheeled temple cart or chariot, worked in the folk metalsmithing tradition of Rajasthan or Central India and consistent with votive or ritual objects produced for temple use or festival processions. The elephant figure is rendered with expressive naive vitality, its body decorated with punched dot ornament, fitted with small suspension bells at the neck and mounted by a rider figure at the rear, the whole set on four pierced disc wheels. The cart takes the form of a domed pavilion or shrine with arched pierced openings, decorative battlemented edges and a finial at the apex, the large spoke wheels pierced with floral rosette patterns in a manner characteristic of Dhokra or lost-wax cast metalwork of the region. The surface shows an honest age patina of warm golden brass tones on the cart contrasting with darker iron oxidation on the elephant body, consistent with extended age and use. Condition is very good with no missing components, the wheels remaining functional and all suspension bells intact.
