Hand-Colored Minton Majolica Tile with Bird, Butterflies and Ivy (1873). Ceramic, Glaze. Height .5 in., Width 8 in. square. Weight 1 lb. 14.9 oz. Stamped Mintons on underside. English firm Mintons China Works is also referred to as Mintons, and both names are used when referring to pieces made by the company. These three tiles feature decorative botanical patterns of nasturtium in red and yellow, a bird, butterflies, and ivy. These 8 tiles were typically designed to use on friezes or decorative wall borders. The bird tile was designed for Mintons by Christopher Dresser (Scottish, 1834-1904). Widely regarded as one of the Aesthetic Movements most influential independent industrial designer and a well-respected design theorist, Dresser designed items for over 30 firms in the U.K., France, and U.S.
