Height 3.5 in., Width 7.25 in., Depth 7.25 in. Signed Steuben on underside. This hand blown lead crystal bowl is Steuben shape number 8060 -- the Spiral Bowl designed by Donald Pollard and launched by Steuben Glass in 1954 -- comprising a simple hemispherical bowl form raised on a compact foot formed with two tapered spiral bands of glass that create a subtle helical twist effect, the pure geometry of the bowl above contrasting with the animated spiral movement of the foot below in a characteristic exercise in mid-century modernist restraint. The design is one of Pollards most enduring and widely collected Steuben forms -- produced in a range of sizes including 7 inch diameter examples measuring approximately 3.75 inches high -- and demonstrates the design philosophy that guided Steuben through its celebrated mid-century period, in which form was allowed to speak without decoration and the extraordinary optical clarity of Steuben full lead crystal was treated as the primary aesthetic experience. Donald Pollard was one of the most prolific and important designers at Steuben Glass, also responsible for shape 8304 the Eagle sculpture appearing in this auction as Lot 039, and for a wide range of bowls, vases and figurative works in the Steuben catalogue. The base carries the incised Steuben script signature confirming authenticity. Condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or cloudiness and the crystal retaining full brilliance.
