Box Height 8.5 in., Width 13 in., Depth 15 in. Hat Height 5 in., Width 10 in., Depth 12.5 in. This oval hat box by Dobbs Fifth Avenue Hats of New York is covered in a dark burgundy textured material with the firms name lettered in gold around the rim band -- Fifth Ave, Dobbs, New York -- and the Dobbs heraldic crest centered on the side, depicting two rampant lions flanking a shield bearing the D monogram below a crown, with the firm name beneath. The lid retains the original oval paper label printed Dobbs Fifth Avenue Hats New York with spaces for the customers name, and two leather or leatherette strap tabs for carrying. Dobbs and Co. opened its original retail store at 242 Fifth Avenue New York City on September 15, 1908, founded by H. DeWitt Dobbs as a retail outlet for the finest Crofut and Knapp hat products -- part of a deliberate strategy to associate the Dobbs name with Fifth Avenue prestige and the upper echelon of American male fashion. The Dobbs hat box itself was designed as an integral part of the brand identity from the earliest years, with colorful artwork wrapping around the exterior showcasing Fifth Avenue, a marketing approach that made the box as recognizable as the hats within. Dobbs eventually moved to 1 West Fifty-Seventh Street and Fifth Avenue and became one of the most recognized names in American mens haberdashery through the mid-20th century. Vintage Dobbs hat boxes in good condition with their original graphics and labels intact are actively collected as pieces of American advertising and fashion history, with comparable examples selling in the range of $70 to $150. Condition is good overall with honest age wear consistent with use, the gold lettering and crest legible and the label intact. This rare case is made of cast or molded paper pulp.
