Robert Ernst Marx (1925-2020) was born in 1925 in Northeim, Germany, before his family moved to the United States two years later. He studied at the University of Illinois where he achieved his BFA in painting (1951) as well as his MFA in printmaking (1953). Marxs practice focused primarily on oil painting but extended into drawing, printmaking, bronze-cast sculpture, and midcentury etchings, commonly touching upon religious and social issues and their connection to power dynamics. Marxs work is featured in international collections including, but not limited to the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Hirschhorn Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Library of Congress, Museum of Modern Art, and the National Gallery of Art.
