This substantial multi-strand torsade necklace comprises numerous strands of natural seed pearls -- small irregular baroque freshwater pearls with the characteristic organic shape, soft iridescent luster and cream white color that distinguish natural seed pearls from the uniformly round cultured pearl -- gathered and secured at each end by a large domed 14 karat yellow gold ball clasp with reeded rope-twist collar detail, the clasp hallmarked 14K with the gold weight of the piece estimated at approximately 44 grams -- a substantial figure reflecting significant gold content in the clasp assembly and confirming the quality of materials throughout. At approximately 44 grams of 14 karat gold the intrinsic metal value of the clasp alone is meaningful at current gold spot prices, while the natural seed pearls -- increasingly rare in the contemporary market as natural pearl harvesting has given way almost entirely to cultured pearl production -- contribute additional value beyond their decorative appeal as genuinely organic gem material formed without human intervention. The torsade pearl necklace -- from the French word for twist or cable -- became one of the defining jewelry forms of the 1980s luxury market, worn by figures ranging from Nancy Reagan to Barbara Bush and representing the decade's enthusiasm for bold wearable pearl jewelry combining the timeless prestige of natural pearls with a contemporary dramatic silhouette. The domed gold ball clasp is a particularly bold design focal point consistent with the production of high-end American jewelers of the period who favored substantial sculptural clasps as signature elements. Condition is very good with the pearls lustrous and iridescent and the 14K hallmarked clasp intact and bright.
