Framed height 18.5 in., width 9.5 in.; sight, height 14.5 in., width 6.5 in., Color woodblock print; o-tanzaku, Estate of James Cash, St. Louis MO. Hiroshige is recognized as a master of the ukiyo-e woodblock printing tradition, having created 8,000 prints of everyday life and landscape in Edo-period Japan with a splendid, saturated ambience. His woodblock prints continue to convey the beauty of Japan and provide insight into the everyday life of its citizens during the Edo period. The appeal of his tender, lyrical landscapes was not restricted to the Japanese audience. Hiroshiges work had a profound influence on the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists of Europe. Pheasant and Chrysanthemums is owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC, as an outstanding example of ukiyo-e woodblock.
