Height 30 in., Width 18 in., Depth 5 in. This large recumbent stag sculpture is a characteristic example of the decorative brass animal figures produced and retailed by Sarreid Ltd, the American company founded in 1967 by Alex Sarratt and Walter Reid, who established workshops in Spain and across Asia to bring Old World and Eastern decorative arts traditions to the American interior design market. The figure is cast in dark patinated bronze with sweeping naturalistic antlers and a composed resting pose, the body decorated with applied gilt brass repoussE panels of dense floral medallion and foliate arabesque ornament at the neck, shoulders, saddle and leg bands, creating a rich two-tone contrast between the dark bronze body and the warm gold repoussE details. Sarreid recumbent deer and stag sculptures of this form were produced in the Hollywood Regency style that dominated American interior design in the 1960s and 1970s, drawing on Thai and Southeast Asian ceremonial animal figure traditions as filtered through the Sarreid design aesthetic. The piece is in very good condition with the dark patina intact, the repoussE panels firmly attached and no visible damage to the antlers or body, consistent with Sarreid pieces typically bearing no maker mark as was standard practice for early production. This is one of the most recognizable and sought after forms in the Sarreid decorative arts catalogue.
