Artist Robert Motherwell was a pivotal figure in American Abstract Expressionism. His first solo exhibit was presented in 1944 at Peggy Guggenheims Art of this Century Gallery in New York. Motherwell was actually one of the first artists of his generation to be given a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1965. A prolific artist, he created significant works up until his death in 1991. A widely collected artist, his works are included in hundreds of museums and collections around the world including the Whitney Museum of American Art, National Gallery of Art, Walker Art Center, MoMA and Tate Modern.
