Height 9.5 in, Width 2.75 in., Depth 4 in. each. Weight 2 lbs. 13.4 oz. each. Chinese Foo Dogs symbolize prosperity and good luck and are used as guardians to protect homes and businesses from evil spirits. The beautiful three-color glaze technique used on these figures is in green, yellow, and brown. This matched pair of Chinese glazed pottery guardian lions -- known as Fu Lions or Shi -- are modeled in the traditional seated posture with one paw raised over a brocade ball, the heads turned slightly outward, the open mouths with rectangular apertures and bulbous black glass eyes, the curling mane, scrolled body decoration and stepped rectangular bases all rendered with confident detail consistent with Chinese export ceramics production. The glaze treatment employs the sancai three color palette of green, amber yellow and white -- a tradition with roots in Tang dynasty ceramics -- applied in flowing overlapping washes that pool and run in the recesses of the modeling creating the characteristic variegated surface seen on Chinese decorative ceramics of this type. The bases retain areas of unglazed buff stoneware consistent with Chinese production, and the scale -- appearing to be approximately 12 to 14 inches in height -- is appropriate for interior display as traditional guardians flanking a doorway, fireplace or entry. The pair is in good condition overall with minor glaze crazing and wear to the bases consistent with age, no significant chips or losses visible to either figure.
