This matched pair of Chinese export porcelain soup plates are of octagonal form with shaped rims, each measuring 8.5 inches in diameter and decorated at the center in famille rose enamels with a European heraldic achievement comprising a shield bearing two mullets or stars on a blue field with a diagonal bend in black and terracotta, surmounted by a mantled helm with a crest of a demi-figure holding a scythe, the whole flanked by scrolling gilt acanthus cartouche work and supported by a passant boar on a green grassy compartment. Chinese export armorial porcelain was produced at the Jingdezhen kilns during the 18th century for the European market, with individual services commissioned by noble and merchant families through the East India Companies of Britain, the Netherlands, France and Portugal -- each service unique to the commissioning family and bearing their specific heraldic arms.
