Munich-based artist Josef Rudolf Witzel was a successful illustrator, painter, and poster artist and leading exponent of the German Art Nouveau movement otherwise known as Jugendstil. This artwork was part of the subscription series of small-sized prints called Les Les Maitres de lAffiche (The Masters of the Poster) which featured works by 97 artists from France, Italy, England, and Germany. The Masters of the Poster series was conceived by Belle Epoque Master Printer Jules Cheret, inventor of the three-stone lithographic printing process and often considered the founder of the modern poster. The first four plates of the series were released December 1895 and the final prints were made November 1900 with a total of 256 plates printed.
