Height 33 in., Width 24.5 in. Signed lower right, numbered 50/75 lower left. Works by Native American artist and activist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith are included in museums and collections around the world. A studio artist working since 1970, she earned a BA in Art Education from Framingham State College and a MA in Art from University of New Mexico. Among numerous honors, Quick-to-See Smith has received the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters Grant, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Womens Caucus for the Arts, the College Art Associations Committee on Women in the Arts Award, the New Mexico Governors Outstanding New Mexico Womans Award, and the New Mexico Governors Award for Excellence in the Arts. This piece was created for the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City and imagery includes animals representative of the Wasatch Mountain Range such as Powder the snowshoe hare and Copper the coyote, both symbols of speed and endurance and drawn from the regions landscape and culture.
