Height .5 in., Width 6.25 in., Depth 4.5 in. Weight 9.3 oz. Signed Daum France on underside. This pate de verre art glass dish by Daum of Nancy is modeled in the form of a large naturalistic leaf, the surface worked in deep forest green with a satin matte finish and incised vein detail radiating from the central rib, the irregular lobed outline following the natural form of the leaf with characteristic pate de verre depth and translucency visible where the glass thins toward the edges. The leaf is fitted with a small applied gilt bronze stem and tendril at one end -- a combination of pate de verre glass with gilt bronze mounts that is a hallmark of the Daum production tradition, following the great Louis Majorelle and Daum collaborations of the Art Nouveau period. Daum of Nancy, founded in 1878 and today a state-owned enterprise, is recognized alongside Emile Galle and Rene Lalique as one of the three great names of French art glass, celebrated above all for the pate de verre technique in which finely ground colored glass is mixed with a binder, placed in a mold and kiln fired to produce forms of extraordinary color depth and surface quality. The piece is signed Daum France to the underside and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or losses to the glass or bronze mount. The satin green color and restrained naturalistic form make this a highly displayable example of the Daum decorative arts vocabulary.
