Sight Height 30 in., Width 26.5 in. Framed Height 43 in., Width 38.5 in. This richly painted oil on canvas depicts an exuberant bouquet of mixed flowers arranged in a gilt footed urn set on a stone ledge, the composition including roses, tulips, carnations, anemones, marigolds, morning glories and trailing jasmine rendered against a dark brown ground in the manner of the great Flemish and Italian Baroque flower painters of the 17th and 18th centuries. The arrangement rises dramatically from the urn in an asymmetrical cascade, the blooms painted with confident impasto brushwork and close observation of individual petal and leaf forms, the warm reds, corals, pinks and whites of the flowers set against deep green foliage and punctuated by accents of cobalt blue. The composition, palette, dark ground and treatment of the gilt urn are closely consistent with the tradition of flower painting established in the Spanish Netherlands and Italy in the late 17th century, with particular affinities to the circle of Mario Nuzzi, Gaspar Pieter Verbruggen or their followers. The painting is presented in a superb period carved and gilt wood Baroque frame with pierced scrolling acanthus crest and corners, the frame itself of considerable quality and likely Italian or South German, late 17th to early 18th century. Canvas condition appears good with some expected age craquelure and darkening of the ground, a professional cleaning and examination would likely reveal additional detail and enhance the overall presentation.
