Height 48 in., Width 17 in., Depth 16 in. In 1947, artist Mel Meyer entered the Marianist order and took his final vows in 1952. He earned a BA from Dayton University and his MFA degree at the University of Notre Dame after which he traveled to Europe to study art in France and Switzerland. A prolific painter, sculptor, muralist, handmade paper, textiles, and glass artist, Brother Mels colorful and playful artworks are instantly recognizable and can be seen around the U.S. and Europe, but most especially here in St. Louis, where he was based. Brother Mel is widely known as the founder, Director, and Curator of St. John Vianney High Schools Marianist Galleries where he served as Artist-in-Residence and maintained his art studio for more than 40 years. One sculpture that is a variation on the theme of his stacked chair pieces is familiar to many: Three Stacked Chairs is located in downtown Kirkwood (MO) by the Farmers Market, a location not two miles from Meyers studio.
