Height 5.75 in., Width 9.75 in., Depth 2.75 in. Weight 1 lb. 1.8 oz. Label on underside reads Ant.lang Inhaber K. Lang Oberammergau. Nr. 68. This figural ceramic ewer by German studio potter Anton Lang is modeled in the form of a recumbent deer with the animals elongated neck forming the spout and the tall arching antlers serving as the handle, covered overall in a rich turquoise blue glaze with soft celadon variations characteristic of Langs Oberammergau workshop production. The neck and shoulder of the figure carry incised curvilinear scroll ornament in a manner consistent with the decorative vocabulary of the German Arts and Crafts tradition within which Lang worked, the fluid animal form demonstrating the skilled throwing and modeling for which his workshop became known. Anton Lang was a celebrated figure in both the ceramic arts and cultural life of Bavaria, operating his pottery at Theaterstrasse in Oberammergau while achieving international renown as the actor who portrayed Jesus Christ in the Oberammergau Passion Play in 1900, 1910 and 1922, visiting America in 1923-24 where he worked briefly at Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati. The piece is in excellent condition with a vivid unfaded glaze and no chips, cracks or repairs visible to the body, spout or handle. The base should be examined for the Anton Lang Oberammergau mark which would confirm attribution and assist in precise dating within the workshop production period of 1900 to 1938.
