This American sterling silver compote is of classic form with a broad shallow circular dish raised on a tapering baluster stem and circular domed foot, the rim of the dish and the shoulder of the foot both decorated with matching applied gadroon rope twist borders in a restrained Neoclassical style consistent with American silversmithing production of the mid 20th century. The dish interior is plain and polished, reflecting light with the characteristic warm brightness of sterling silver, and shows a faint engraved motif at the center which may be a monogram or decorative device.
