Born in Paris, Lachaise moved to Boston in 1905 at the age of 23 and wed wife Isabel, the inspiration for his female figurative sculptures—his most compelling artworks were sculpted elegies to her body. In 1935, Lachaise, widely considered as having played a pivotal role in the birth of American Modernism, was honored with the first retrospective exhibition given to a living artist at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
